Every Memorial Day, my husband and I take the dogs hiking. We escape to the mountains for the day, and leave behind the yard work, housework, and any other obligations the world tries to push on us.

My Dad, a WWII veteran, always told me to take the time to stop and smell the roses. He was at his happiest whenever he was alone in the woods — hunting, trapping, fishing, or just sitting quietly. This one’s for you, Dad.

Happy Memorial Day to all.
